Cat Compact Brand Foundation, Launch & Training (Ongoing)
Making Cat feel closer to home.
Caterpillar is a global icon in construction, known for the heavy equipment, engines and machinery that power some of the world’s biggest jobs. But there was one audience the brand had struggled to connect with: small business owners.
Research revealed why. For many smaller operators, Cat felt intimidating, expensive and built for someone else. One participant put it simply:
“I don’t feel like I can walk into those shiny Cat dealers with my dirty work boots.”
The opportunity
Small businesses didn’t need a smaller version of Cat. They needed a Cat that felt more accessible, more personal and easier to do business with.
That became the foundation for Cat Compact: a new experience designed around the realities of small business owners. One that brings simplicity, speed and local connection to every interaction—from finding the right equipment to getting financing, service and support.
Cat Compact isn’t just a new sales channel. It’s a new way for small businesses to experience the Cat brand.
Building the brand from the inside out
As Senior Copywriter, I helped build the messaging architecture that would bring this experience to life across markets and touchpoints.
Working closely with strategy, I co-authored “At the Ready,” the organizing platform for Cat Compact. From there, I developed a foundational messaging matrix that connected the platform back to Caterpillar’s enterprise brand pillars while giving Cat Compact its own approachable voice and personality.
The goal wasn’t to create a library of finished ads. It was to create a messaging system that marketing and dealer teams around the world could use, adapt and localize—without losing the core idea or voice of the brand.
I developed:
Foundational Messaging Matrix — The strategic messaging framework, including positioning, pillars, proof points, audience messaging and supporting copy.
“At the Ready” Platform — A unifying brand idea built around being prepared to help small businesses take on what’s next.
Explainer Video — Messaging that introduces the Cat Compact experience in a simple, approachable way.
Training & Enablement — Messaging and materials designed to help dealer teams understand and deliver the new experience.
Brand Playbook — Voice, tone and messaging guidance to help teams stay consistent while adapting communications to their local markets.
The result
Instead of asking small business owners to fit themselves into the Caterpillar experience, Cat Compact was built to meet them where they are.
And instead of giving dealers a rigid set of marketing assets, we gave them something more useful: a flexible messaging foundation they can make their own.
Because for a small business, having the right equipment matters. But knowing someone has your back matters just as much.
